We are in the midst of the biggest information explosion in human history. Today, we are living in a time that rivals and surpasses that of the era of the printing press. Information today is exploding outwards in speeds faster than light. What we have traditionally done via ink and paper, we now do all electronically. When once we studied in august halls of learning, inside huge classrooms and under wide roofs, now we study in virtually any place we can. The old schools of yesterday give way to online colleges and universities of today. While the act of physically attending class is still seen as a valid mode of study, it would just be a matter of time before everyone goes to school in a virtual classroom. The message of the future is clear: online colleges and universities is our future, and it’s here now knocking on our doors bidding us to open them.

What went before

The seas of change never sit still. In an age when communication technology was booming, many have already envisioned a time when it would be superfluous to physically go to classes. Before the internet however, many thought that modern education would transpire in radio transistors and television sets. In fact, earlier attempts to move distance learning from mail into using modern technologies featured the use of broadcasted educational lessons in television and radio. However, before Tim Berners-Lee invented what would be the World Wide Web later, hardly anyone pictured going to school in virtual classrooms in real-time. Yet today, online colleges and universities number by the thousands and it takes a lot of work for each accrediting agency concerned to regulate and control all these institutions into producing quality education.

The harbinger of change

Today, no one can argue that the internet is the biggest resource of knowledge in the world. You can ask and find almost anything in the web. Wikipedia, the biggest online collaboration of encyclopedic knowledge, is proof positive that freedom of information works in a dispersive way. Given free rein to move, it will eternally move outward, in all directions. Online colleges and universities work in the same breath. Wherever there is an internet connection, there you will find space and opportunity for higher education learning. Internet colleges and universities reach into places traditional schools will never be able to reach. In far-flung areas and overseas location, only the internet serves as the bridge between ignorance and education. Previously unthought-of of, human evolution is being shaped and guided by the mass culture of the web.

Decay of the old order

Decrepit classrooms, moth-eaten books, tired teachers, and oppressive social surroundings – these are the hallmarks of the old system of education, wherein students compete with distracting surroundings to gain a foothold into quality education. In 2001, it was estimated that the U.S. educational system had deteriorated so bad it was now behind countries such as Japan, China, South Korea, and Singapore – countries that the United States used to beat when it came to education. The education of America’s youth seemed to be going from bad to worse. Then came online colleges and universities – suddenly, thing started to look up.

A rationale for improvement

Online colleges and universities gave students a wider choice in pursuing higher education. In place of pursuing degrees in traditional formal setting, many now choose to study in online colleges and universities. This isn’t just a flash in the pan thing too. This is a trend that will continue and further expand many years from now. These internet school centers are the way of the future, and that future isn’t stopping now to wait for those unable or are too slow to catch up with the times.

Technology is being put to good use. Some may say everything is happening too quickly, too fast for anything to be seriously contemplated and studied. Yet progress goes on. Knowledge will not be imprisoned simply because the unknown is waiting. Online colleges and universities have given students a freedom they have never enjoyed ever since the first school came into being.

For the first time in education, students aren’t merely just students; they’re also creators of content too. They’re not just recipients; they’re also part of a network of organisms transferring knowledge from one point to another. Students are not just students. They’re teachers and researchers, teaching themselves and teaching others.

It’s an exciting time to be a part of this change. Everyone is a participant in the formation of a new system of education, one that has the potential to be the greatest among humanity’s evolution. The realm of cyberspace is the playground by which future Einsteins would run around and roam free. It is imperative that they be given an environment that is conducive to learning and developing. Thus, along with the development of new technologies and new methods of online teaching, teachers are encouraged to find ways to merge the new technologies with old practices of teaching that have produced fantastic results.

Regulation of the industry

The biggest concern now within the educational field is that online colleges and universities grow too numerous to effectively be policed. All educational institutions must be regulated to ensure each school produces quality education. The country cannot afford to produce online schools that are mere diploma mills. It has to ensure that higher education is maintained at a high standard. As such, accrediting bodies have been created to oversee the regulation of online schools.

Online colleges and universities have different delivery methods from traditional live class schools, yet the knowledge they teach is basically still the same. What has changed is only the way that teachers bring the lessons to students and how students bring their work to teachers. The mode of interaction has also changed, but the basics of it, the dynamics of learning and interacting remain the same. Any teacher of online schools will tell you now that the techniques they use in teaching classes remain the same – inductive, deductive reasoning are developed, and the student is led to think critically to arrive at solutions on their own.

How do accredited online universities get their accreditation, and why is it so important for an online school to be accredited?

Accreditation is a seal of approval an accrediting body gives to an educational institution showing that the educational institution has met the strict standards set forth by the accrediting body with regard to the quality of education provided by each institution. Most schools get their accreditation by inviting the accrediting body into their schools and allowing the accrediting agency to check their facilities, their faculties, their students, and their school’s overall performance. There are many criteria that an online school has to meet before they are given accreditation. It would be sufficient to say that any school gaining accreditation can be sure to provide quality education, since many of the key areas required in providing quality education are checked by accrediting agencies, and if an online school passed accreditation, it only means they have met the stringent criteria required to pass the accreditation.

Schools typically start by requesting for a written standard from an accrediting agency. The school then studies these standards and applies the necessary changes within the institution. Once the school feels it is ready to be reviewed, it calls the accrediting body and requests for an accreditation visit. Accreditation officials then visit the school and check if everything is in order. If they find the school has met the standards given, an accreditation is given.

Accreditation is typically renewed after every few years, depending on the number of times standards and regulations change. So an accredited school now may lose accreditation later if they fail to keep up with the standards set forth by the agencies.

Typical requirements a school must meet before being accredited include:

Certain number of teachers with specific degrees, credits, and other qualifications attached to them

Adequate school facilities, library, laboratory, etc.

Curriculum approved by the state department of education

Why choose accredited online universities?

Simple, accredited online universities ensure that the educational institution you are going to has earned the highest marks in education. It means that the quality of education it provides is excellent and well dependable. It means that if you go look for a job bearing the name of the school, you will be ensured that the school name will be trusted and will not be discriminated against. Also, only students of accredited online universities qualify for federal aid. So if you’re planning to apply for federal aid, you better make sure you go to an accredited educational institution. That, and the fact that going to accredited online universities makes it easier to transfer credits from one accredited institution to another, make it a more compelling reason to choose accredited online universities over non-accredited online schools.

Myths about accreditation

Not all accredited online universities are validly accredited. Some of them are accredited by bogus accrediting organizations. Some online schools even go so far as to appropriate the name of famous schools and claim affiliation with these schools. Yet they will neither be accredited nor truly affiliated with such schools. They are only using the name of the famous schools as a way to attract unsuspecting customers. To be sure the school you will be going to is validly accredited, go to the websites of some of the major accrediting bodies in the United States. They are:

(ACICS) Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools

(DETC) Distance Education and Training Council

(ACCSCT) Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology

(COE) Council on Occupational Education

(ACCET) Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training

These five accrediting bodies hold jurisdictions that are national in scope. Any school or accrediting agency they empower to accredit in turn is sure to be valid. Consequently, you can also turn to regional and specialized professional accreditors if you don’t find the school you are looking for in their list. Regional and specialized accreditors are more comprehensive in their list and often present a more accurate accreditation since their scope is narrower and more defined.

Students also have to remember that the U.S. government itself does not perform the accreditation. Rather, these accrediting bodies are private commissions formed to review and define the minimum educational standards that each school must meet in order to be accredited.

Types of Accreditation

Accredited online universities may fall into two kinds: institutional or specialized. Institutional accredited online universities mean that the whole institution has been accredited while specialized accreditation means that only the program or department cited for accreditation has passed the requirements set forth by the accrediting body.

Searching for accredited online universities

As mentioned above, the surest way of finding accredited online universities is to go to the website of each accrediting body. You can search by institution name, by state, by country, by programs, etc. Once you have made sure that the school you plan on going to is accredited, you can inquire with the institution the requirements for application. If you have some plans to continue your studies or if you plan to transfer schools at some point, it is important to know if other schools will accept your credit from said school.

Difference between accredited online universities and non-accredited online universities

Well, for one, non-accredited schools have cheaper tuition fees. They also have lower standards of education. If you go to one that is not accredited, you may not be sure of passing the board exam or licensure exam of your course. While accredited online universities may be more expensive, you can be rest assured that the money you are paying for is being fully compensated by getting quality education. Another thing going for accredited institutions is that you can be sure that they are not online scams. There are many fly-by-night online schools in the internet, with many of them operated by shady individuals and organizations. Without an accrediting body’s seal of approval, an online school may be a possible scam school. To protect yourself, always look for accreditation.

Correspondence courses have become moot with the advent of the internet. Nowadays, teachers and students don’t have to wait for the mail to arrive to interact with each other. They can do so in real-time, at any place they want to. This has resulted in a sudden boom of schools offering online classes. Because of the accessibility of online schools, with money and technology being the only limiter to access, many students prefer taking online classes as opposed to attending a live one.

The advantages of taking correspondence courses

The first obvious advantage of correspondence courses is of course accessibility. Courses or degrees you might not have been able to take due to the inaccessible location of the school offering it now becomes easily accessible to you. Inflexible scheduling of classes disappears as an issue in correspondence courses. It allows those with jobs to get their degrees without having to conform to a strict schedule.
Since scheduling is chosen by the student, it gives the students the flexibility to study and learn at their own pace. Instances of being unable to follow in class or being left behind in the lecture won’t happen as the student can just as easily review any material they like since all teaching materials are accessible digitally.
Attending these courses also have the added benefit of saving on costs which would otherwise have been spent on transportation and meal allowances had the student opted to attend a live class. What’s more, with online classes, one doesn’t have to deal with unpleasant social experiences in school such as bullying, class ridicule, and peer pressure.

Disadvantages of correspondence courses

One particular disadvantage of attending online classes is that all outcomes depend on motivation. So the success of such a method of learning leans heavily in favor of students with a highly motivated sense of learning. Lazy students will not prosper under such a system of education.
Likewise, correspondence courses require one to be as self-sufficient as possible. One must be able to read and understand the course materials sent to them by themselves. Honest self-evaluation must also be present; otherwise, there can be no true learning if the student lies to themselves about the scope and breadth of their understanding of the subject they are studying.
Successfully dealing with these issues will make a student much more successful in earning their online degrees or diplomas. Many who do finish online classes show high aptitude in both independence in doing school tasks and performing objective self-evaluation. Most who fail online classes also exhibit the opposite.

MBA distance learning provides interested students the opportunity to enroll in a graduate degree program without having to go to a learning center or school. Today, getting a graduate degree after college is necessary if one wants to move ahead of his line of work. Take a note that better opportunities are given to individuals with masters and doctorate’s degree, and in a world where competition is highly encouraged, there is no better way to get in the game than to get an MBA.

MBA distance learning is designed for working professionals who want to enhance their career and its a perfect substitute for those parents who have kids and for those individuals who want to enroll in a recognized institution that can provide better quality of education, which they probably do not have in their state or country. However, not everyone can handle the demands of work, family and studies. Taking an MBA distance learning requires focus, patience and discipline.

Finding the best online learning school for you should be easy. First thing you should consider are the requirements, registration process and courses offered. There are several well-known universities and institutions that offer MBA distance learning to anyone and anywhere. Requirements would depend on the chosen institution but generally, some of these would include a completed online application form, transcript of records, a resume and a high GMAT score. Some schools would require applicants to have a solid working experience from 3-5 years. They might also be asked to submit letters of recommendation and personal essays.

The process of application starts with submission of requirements. Once the application is submitted, it will undergo an assessment. All documents provided by the applicant will be thoroughly evaluated and its your best interest to pass the necessary documents, otherwise the school might turn your application down. Just because it is a distance learning it does not necessarily mean that they have a lower standard of application. In fact, some of these MBA distance learning schools are extremely strict in accepting students. If the applicant has passed the evaluation process, the school will inform the applicant immediately. He will then be given the option of his program plan – 12 months, 24 months or 36 months.

How does the process of MBA distance learning work? Depending on the institution, the process of distance learning mainly involves online classroom experience coupled with scheduled live classroom practice. Normally, these classes have an internet-based forum where students come together for a discussion. However, unlike classroom discussion where students go to the same classroom at the same time, the student can visit the class forum at his most convenient time. Web-based classes can include forum discussion, video conferences and video classes. Assessment may be given depending on the school’s program and some of the schools would require students for campus visits to submit class papers or take examinations. Some schools conduct learning evaluation during online discussion or videoconferencing participation.

There are several educational institutions in the United States that offer MBA distance learning. One of these is Thunderbird School of Global Management.
Thunderbird School of Global Management which is located in Arizona offers this type of learnin, available for all students around the world – rated by US News and World Report as #1 in International Programs and by Financial Times as #1 in International Business. Thunderbird School of Global Management’s MBA distance learning includes both virtual and on-site classroom experience. In order to start with the virtual session, the student should first check the required features of the computer software and reliable internet connection needed to download school materials.

University of Florida is also one of the top schools when it comes to MBA distance learnin since its ranked by The Economist as #1 Distance Learning in 2010 and by Financial Times as #2 U.S. Best Value MBA, MBA distance learning offered by University of Florida is given in 2-year program and 1-year program. They also give their students a chance to work in different industries such as telecommunications, banking and international trade.

Indiana University offers Master of Business Administration that can be completed in 2-5 years. Basically, the course will concentrate on general administration. Indiana University has ranked #2 in Distance Learning by The Economist. Pennsylvania State University is another school that offers online MBA in a two-year program. The course involves both online classes and internship program or what they call as “residency experience”.

In Babson College, they grant a 2-year program in Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Accounting, Finance and Ethics and Law for students in all states in the US. This program includes internet-based sessions, one on one discussion and field experiences. Babson College was ranked #1 in Entrepreneurship by Financial Times and #21 in Evening MBA Program by US News & World Report.

If you do not prefer to go to the campus for your entire MBA distance learning program, the best choice is the University of Massachusetts. Hailed as #9 for Greatest Opportunities for Women by Princeton Reviews, the entire online MBA course in University of Massachusetts can be completed online in 2 years. Some of the courses offered are Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Independent Research and Business Data Analysis. Since there is no campus visit required, the tuition is also less expensive.

There are also overseas institutions that offer quality MBA distance learning. IE Business School is one of the most recognized schools that offers Global MBA from students anywhere in the world. It is the #1 Distance Learning School by The Wall Street Journal, #3 by Business Week and #7 by Financial Times. Manchester Business School and Warwick Business School are institutions in the UK that have good reputations.

Learning from distance is a great possibility to further education advancement without jeopardizing one’s existing career and family life. To choose the best institution that can facilitate the finest and most effective online classroom experience, make sure to examine several factors such as school’s credibility, length of the programs offered, tuition fee, opportunities given and mode of classes. Having less time should not be a hindrance in getting the education you want to achieve.

One of the leading universities in India is the Institute of Chartered Financial Analyst of India known to provide ICFAI distance education. This is an educational method which provides distance learning courses for those who want to attend a supplementary education or advanced class without being physically present in school. With complete utilization of the internet as a medium for education and class interaction, you can you can now have your class anytime and anywhere. Founded in 1984, ICFAI distance education has continued to deliver quality education for two decades through innovation and customer care.

Those who are working professionals, parents who want to study again or students having a hard time juggling work and studies can openly register in this online program anytime of the year. The minimum requirements to qualify for ICFAI distance education is a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline.

From 1985-95, this type of online education only included some accounting courses. Since there are other areas that need to be, the course was extended and other programs were created. In 1995, they already built eight centers for ICFAI Business School and offer courses in finance and management. In 2003 up to present, ICFAI started to grow, accepting students in 10 states as well as other countries such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China. Their aim is to be a multidisciplinary university with numerous locations around the world.

The ICFAI’s core philosophy revolves around merit and ethics which they particularly applied to ICFAI distance education. This has become their four important philosophical foundations taught to both the students and teachers of ICFAI as an institution. As a merit-based institution, ICFAI distance education requires students to undergo the same process in all aspects of education such as admission, interviews and presentations. ICFAI made it clear that during the recruitment of the students, it is clear that all students will be going to go through the same process. They stated it to lessen the tendency of biases to the students, as well as to the school management. The second which is the ethical institution pertains to ICFAI’s code of conduct for all its school members, both for the marketing staff and school alumni. Third, the inclusive institution aims to provide equality and easy access to all the deserving students. It only means that they meticulously choose those students who will be a part of their institution. Fourth is to be a socially responsible institution which simply means that they will follow all the regulatory measures and needs of the school itself and maintain important values that will better the society.

The significant attributes of this particular program is the price, service, quality and innovation. When we speak of the price, for them they mean the right price is what the customer is willing to pay for it, 50% payable fees are offered for merit scholarship.

When we speak of the correspondence MBA, it usually refers to an academic program which provides education and learning through online teaching. Even the professionals, businessmen or the students having their Masters Degree are welcome to enroll. This kind of education is created mainly for those who want to have their master’s degree in a different school which may be too far from their location, allowing the students to study without having to move in the school’s particular site.

Another good thing about correspondence MBA is that the students are allowed to participate in the virtual class discussions and take their exams online. The students will be given a set of course materials they need in class. They can study these materials at their own pace, own place and convenient time. Correspondence MBA made it possible for students and professors to interact online even if they are located miles away from each other. Simple as that, all you have to do is to register to any correspondence MBA classes, learn and enjoy the modern way of achieving your master’s degree, no hassles.

Since most professionals want to improve their management skills and acquire expertise in other areas such as marketing and finance, they take the correspondence MBA. It is a big help for businessmen primarily because education has been made easy for the kind of schedule they have. Normally, businessmen have a hectic schedule managing their own businesses so enrolling in an online education allows them to enrich their managing skills. While monitoring the flow of their business, they can also attend classes at the same time without leaving the work they have. As a result, aside from learning and acquiring new skills they can also attend to the needs of their business.

The admission for correspondence MBA is pretty simple. One would need to submit an application online or through mail along with the necessary documents. There is no particular deadline for application but if you want to start school as soon as possible, then it is better to complete the requirements immediately. Bear in mind that slots are filled quickly since candidates will be coming from all parts of the globe. IE Business School which is a recognized institution for correspondence MBA requires application essays, resume, letters of recommendation, official transcripts of records, GMAT scores, passport- size photos and an application fee of 120 Euros.

After submission of requirements, there will be a phone interview to obtain further details about the applicant’s application and to assess if the candidate will be able to keep up with the demands of this type of learning. The candidate’s application will undergo deliberation in the IE Admissions Committee and once approved, the applicant will be informed. The MBA program usually runs for 2 years.

When selecting an institution for distance teaching, there are several factors you have to assess to make sure you will be investing your money and time intelligently. Make sure it is a credible school that provides quality learning both online and on-campus. Also, choose the school that provides great opportunities to meet with great people and work for well-known companies worldwide. This internship experience will significantly augment your career possibilities.
One of the schools that also offer correspondence MBA program apart from IE Business School is Edinburgh Business School. Most of its students are from the United States, Central South America, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. This school also offers financial assistance for students coming from countries like China, Vietnam, Indonesia, South America and sub-Saharan Africa.

IGNOU or the Indira Gandhi National Open University is India’s leading name known for quality correspondence MBA programs. Their programs can either be a general course or a banking- related program. The general program will cover different areas such as Human Resources Management, Financial Management, Operations Management and Marketing Management. The minimum requirements include an undergraduate degree with three years of work experience or a professional degree in Engineering or Medicine or a Professional Qualification in Accountancy.

As for the banking course qualifications, the candidate should be a graduate of a renowned university, has passed the Indian Institute of Bankers CAIIB examination and has experience working in a financial or banking environment for at least two years.

TASMAC Distance Learning, an affiliate of Adam Smith University, offers correspondence MBA education for two years. This institution is endorsed by the French and Liberian governments. To be able to qualify for Masters in Business Administration, the candidate must be a graduate of a recognized university and should have two years of work experience. Their general program works differently such that the first year will cover a uniform set of study materials for all students. For the second year or last year, the students will be given an option to specialize in a certain area like Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, Hotel Management, International Business, Advertising and Public Relations. The grading system requires a passing grade of 50%. The student’s overall grade for his correspondence MBA course will be heavily dependent on the exams which comprise 75% of his total grade and tests and home works that comprise 25%.

Correspondence MBA courses are said to be the most effective and efficient way of training their students. The evaluation of student’s paper works are sent by mail to their professors. For you to be able to register and enroll on this program, you must have an undergraduate degree, most especially in business or subjects which has a relevance to the course you want to take. The students attending a correspondence MBA program is required to have their field exposure or training in management that is why some institutions require 5-8 years of solid working experience. When the student is already registered and enrolled on the MBA Programs, this is the time when they will teach and train them the concepts, strategies, technology and practices that have to do with business. They also follow the curriculum in advanced courses and they use the syllabus which pertains to finance courses, management, human resource, marketing, micro and macroeconomics as well as operations management and many more which has to do with business.

Correspondence courses are really in demand nowadays especially by people who want to acquire education but are very busy to go to formal institutions or schools. Of course, education, whether by residential or through correspondence courses is considered very important in this advanced, industrialized society. Oxford dictionary defines education as an “enlightening process”; “the process of receiving and giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university.” However, such a course changes the traditional perception of education. Correspondence courses break the barriers and limitations to people by providing content that is beneficial, cheap, and very enthralling. This is one of the reasons why these days, correspondence courses are becoming very popular. So for now, find out how this type of seminars and courses do not only change the perception of education – but the way of learning as well.

In western and other societies, formal education starts at preschool education, then primary school, secondary school and finally tertiary school. However, some people opt to go for graduate studies to attain master’s degrees or doctorate degrees. However, because of some circumstances such as work or absence of education institutions in one’s place, some people take correspondence courses. The said course is also known as distance learning—a type of education that needs not the residence of a learner. In this kind of education, students are educated through online classes by a teacher or teachers that are geographically far from them. Students of this course buy textbooks, notes, and other materials in their own places. Sometimes the students receive modules from the institution or the instructor himself. The students are graded using the assignments, exams and reports they give back to their instructors.

Correspondence courses started in 1728. , when Caleb Phillips, a teacher, posted an ad in the Boston Gazette newspaper that he is searching for students who are willing to be receive weekly lessons. Modern distant learning that dates back in the 19th century was mainly depending on the postal services during that time. Conventionally, distance learning is done through the traditional mailing system. Institutions and instructors mail the lessons and the materials to the students and the students mail back their examinations, reports and homework. The disadvantages of this include the lengthy time lapse between the sending and the receiving of the material. Also, it takes money to send the lessons, assignments, modules, etc. to the students and to the instructors as well.

Fortunately, with the advent of technology in this 21st century, distance learning has never been easier and faster. Nowadays, instructors can send the module (in PDF format) to the students through e-mail. The students, on the other hand, can send their course works through the same medium. Aside from that, the materials used in distance learning can also be improved and updated. Since there are many sources of information in the World Wide Web, the students may get new, reliable and free or cheap information that will help them in their study. Added to that, with the messenger or chat application of the internet, students and teachers can instantly communicate with each other—as if both of them are talking inter-personally. Other applications and social networking sites such as Yahoo! Group, Facebook, Friendster and Twitter can enable the students under the same course to have group discussions about difficult topics.

In her book “The Nature and Purpose of Distance Education,” Diana Oblinger wrote several advantages of distance learning. First, distance learning is very, very flexible. This type of education can meet the demands for education of busy and time-restraint people since they can choose their study time. Another advantage of distance learning is that it can save building funds, tax, city services and the other infrastructure funds that the institution needs. Next, distance learning is better for the students and the institutions as well. In traditional learning, there is usually an age limit for acquiring education. Secondary education, for instance, expects the student to be around 16-20 years old. Same is through with graduate studies; students are expected to be around 20-25. This is not the case for distance learning. In distance learning, everyone, regardless of the age can acquire education. This strategy is also beneficial for educational institutions because they can acquire larger audience thus, larger market. The last advantage Oblinger gave in her book is that distance learning can be a catalyst for a more competitive and innovative market for education.

There are a lot of courses offered in correspondence courses. Some of these include Accounting Finance & Bookkeeping, Agriculture, Architecture, Arts and Design, Beauty Therapy, Business & Management, Career Development, Customer Service, Education, English Language, Fashion, Government, Health & Medicine, Language, Music, Microsoft, Philosophy & Religion, Photography, Science, Share Trading, Tourism, Writing & Publishing and a whole lot more. Though almost all courses are now offered online through distance learning, the learner should also take into consideration the requirements for his or her course. For courses that needed actual environment such as forests, ranches or barn, taking online classes is not a very good idea. Well, one can still have these courses through distance learning. However, the student should be sure first that he has an environment in which he can work in. On the other hand, courses such as that of music, computer and those that can be learned without changing the environment is well-suited for distance learning.

Lastly, almost all universities around the world offer correspondence courses. Before choosing an university for correspondence courses, it is important to check on what institution has excellence on the course that one wants. It is not a good idea to go for computer science in an institution famous for agriculture. Likewise, it is not good to take fashion correspondence courses in universities that are known for social sciences. So, whatever course one wants in correspondence courses, what is more important is that the correspondence courses taken are really beneficial and educating. Otherwise, these courses should also be enthralling, fun, cheap and very accessible for the people getting it.

A classroom setting still remains the primary area where students are taught, but distance learning universities have lately been tested and proven ways in which you can enroll in a degree and finish a course. Most distance learning universities do not require students to show up or be in a classroom, but there are also online universities that offer courses where some form of personal interaction may be required. Distance learning universities have become more widespread with the dawn of the internet, and there are now even more non-traditional learners enrolled in this type of education. Whereas the founding fathers of distance education had to make do with snail mail in teaching their students, nowadays, student and teacher interaction within distance learning universities is faster with the use of chat, email, video and audio conferencing, VoIP, and others. Distance learning universities often offer courses from undergraduate to post-graduate degrees, with a few certificate courses for non-full time students.

Distance learning is now playing a significant role in education, in that it is a way for schools to extend their reach to students who live a great distance away, most of whom are from other countries. It is also a practical way for those of you aspiring students to get into your choice of US school without having to spend much on transportation and lodging since you are being taught in the comfort of your own home.

In most distance learning universities, undergraduate levels offer Bachelor and Associate degree programs. For the Associate program, online university students are often required to complete courses amounting to at least 60 credits usually within a 2-year time frame. If you wish to enroll on a Bachelor degree, a common requirement among online universities is for you to finish courses amounting to at least 120 credits. If you are keen on getting your degree on-time, the Bachelor’s degree can be taken within a four-year period of full-time study on your part, much the same as most courses offered in regular universities for full-time students.
Also referred to as open universities, these institutions often do not have strict requirements for accepting students, unlike the regular structured schools. Open universities are less austere as well, lacking the formality familiar to a student enrolled in a regular classroom setting.

There are many virtual universities available upon making a search on the internet. However, it is best to be cautious about which university you choose because there are some fraudulent distance learning schools that are there just to make some easy money. Some tips on how to look for the best online university:

Online universities are often web branches of established universities. Check on the name of the university that you are interested in and, if possible, go to that school’s official website. There you will find a lot of information about the school.

Almost all institutional websites have an option for you to speak with somebody. Click on it so you can talk to a reliable source about fees for the course you wish to take, as well as get answers to any question you might have about the university.

There are open universities that do not have established standards, so in choosing a school, verify that all the subjects for the course you wish to get a degree on are being offered.

Verify that the online university you wish to enroll in has no geographical specifications for their online students. Not all open universities require this, but depending on the course you wish to take, you may have to be required to show up for laboratory, selected lectures, and others. In this instance, there are some open universities who are able to adjust to students from other countries. You may have to recruit a few of your officemates and friends to meet the number of students that the university requires, and the university should be able to create a classroom setting in your location should there be a need for it, like if you need to be in a laboratory.

Make sure that the school is accredited by any of the 6 US accreditation organizations. This is important so that the course you wish to finish will be recognized as valid.

Check on the number of students enrolled in your course. Note that an online teacher handling numerous students may not be as effective as the teacher handling just about five to six students.

One advantage of studying online is the fact that this type of institutions rarely have any age preference for their students. Other advantages are:

These universities often do not require full-time enrollment. So, even if you are a busy working mom, or if you have a 9-5 job that takes up most of your time, you can still study online.

Online universities also offer certificate degrees if you just wish to obtain additional training to move up at work, or have no extra time to be a full-time student.

In the end, if you choose to enroll at any of the distance learning universities that you find online, the biggest factor to assure your success would be the amount of effort you put into the course. There are many courses that you can choose from in any of the distance learning universities online, thus you have a better guarantee of getting that much-longed-for degree. Note also that distance learning universities offer almost the same curriculum as those offered for on-campus students, and distance learning universities will require periodic exams to test the extent of knowledge that you have gained. There are also some distance learning universities that offer to give credits for any degree if you already have a portfolio for that degree or if you have had extensive work experience on a specific field, you just have to get passing marks on a comprehensive exam. One disadvantage for distance learning universities is that there are no scholarship grants, so you may have to seek other sources of financial aid.

Distance Learning Courses, also referred to as distance education, has gone far to reach places and people with the advent of the internet age that would have otherwise been inaccessible. This type of courses are often a one-on-one interaction between a teacher and student with the use of different mediums. Distance learning courses mediums include recorded instructions whether in a DVD format, in Audiotape or CD, by live webcasts, real-time chatting, as well as email and website forum sites. The main aim of distance learning course is to reach possible students who are usually unable to go to a structured classroom set due to constraints of time, distance, and sometimes finances. A majority of US universities include this sort of coursesin their curriculum, and most of them have websites that you can check to on the courses offered, corresponding fees, enrollment procedures and requirements, and verify any other information you might want to have about distance learning courses.

For students, there are many advantages of enrolling in online education, and these are listed below:

Working moms who are interested in pursuing continuing education such as Postgraduate degrees or certificates of training in selected areas will be able to do so without having to spend a lot of time on-campus.

Business people are able to enroll in additional courses without having to leave their businesses for too long.

If you have to work to support your education, then distance learning courses fit your lifestyle best and you do not have to spend days off from work just to attend class.

Distance education also provides people with disabilities a chance to reach their goals and study as much they want to.

Distance learning courses also have many advantages for schools and institutions that offer it:

It lessens the need for these institutions to add more infrastructures to accommodate the growing student population. This saves much on costs and the savings can then be used elsewhere, such as further improvements on their distance education department.

Adds to the school’s overall income by obtaining more enrollees that would not otherwise have enrolled.

Meeting educational demands from a bigger percentage of the population. Gone are the days when institutions had to put a limit on the number of students for a course due to constraints either on school buildings or instructors.

Promotes innovation within the education sector to help educators compete and be at par with its constantly changing environment.

There are many institutions in the US that offer distance learning courses and most of these institutions have already made a name as premiere schools in the country. With distance education, you will be able to enter into the school of your dreams without having to spend much on traveling to it and looking for an affordable place to stay. You will also be able to choose the course that you wish to earn a diploma on. The pressure in studying is mostly lessened because there are institutions that offer you a chance to schedule your exams at a time that you are comfortable with.

Most distance education facilities make use of the following mediums of instruction:

Email – lectures, exams, and other training needs can be sent to your registered email address, as well as any interaction with the teacher as needed.

Video conferencing – this method allows you to be able to attend a lecture with your fellow students, thereby giving room for everyone to voice out concerns and share best practices and significant knowledge with each other. This method of distance education lecturing would normally require a specified time for every student to be available as it is usually done live via the internet.

Television – instructors will normally send training materials, feedback forms, and other course requirements via the mail that you can watch. An advantage of this is that you can watch the lectures repeatedly; hence giving you more time to learn and understand the lectures as best as possible.

Forum within the institution’s official website – this would allow you to interact with your fellow students as well by posting topics into the forum that just about anyone can put their replies on.

Other mediums of communication include web-based telephone, audio recordings, and fax.

Undergraduate degree courses in distance education normally take 2 to 4 years to complete depending on the whether you will be taking an Associate or Bachelor degree. You will need to complete course credits that have a total of 60 credits in order to get certified for that course. As for Bachelor’s degree courses, course credit requirements should reach at least 120 credits. There are postgraduate studies also offered in distance education. For Master’s degree, courses normally take 2-3 years to complete.

If you are a busy professor or a practitioner of psychotherapy with not much time to spare for continuing education, online learning can be the most practical way for you to study further. Most institutions offer PhD courses that can be completed within four to eight years. Aside from PhD degrees, there are also certificate courses offered for those who just wish to add a six-month training certificate to their resume as evidence of work efficiency. Depending on the topic you choose to train in, certificates can be earned from online schools within a day to a year.

Whether you choose to enroll at a regular on-campus school or take finish a degree through distance learning courses, success would always rely on how much effort you have put in to finish the course. This has opened so many avenues for interested non-traditional students and a chance for everyone to go higher up the employment ladder. It is now up to the distance learning student on how you maximize your potentials and opportunities that distance learning courses have supplied you with. Most distance learning institutions providing this type of courses are accredited by many accrediting bodies either within the US or in other countries, so there are better chances of you getting jobs abroad with yourdegree. Fees for distance learning courses degrees vary and it is best if you talk with someone from the institution so you can have a better idea of how much distance learning courses can cost you.
